NCAA Division II Women: Bridgeport stuns powerhouse Grand Valley State in final

Bridgeport stunned five-time champion Grand Valley State with a 1-0 victory in the NCAA Division II women's final.

Brazilian Nara DaCosta scored on a header after Swede Elin Eklund’s shot that hit the corner of the crossbar and right post. Jennifer Wendelius, another of seven Bridgeport players from Sweden, had six saves.

The Purple Knights avenged a 6-0 loss to Grand Valley State in September in handing the Lakers their first loss in 27 games.

"It's a little surreal," said Magnus Nilerud, who is in his 20th year as the Bridgeport head coach. "Obviously, it's a fantastic feeling to beat an unbelievable opponent by squeezing out a result. I thought we played well in the first half and kept it going in the second and scored when we had a chance. Grand Valley is just so good. Hats off this group for making history."

Grand Valley State, the winner of national titles in 2009, 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2015, was making its ninth appearance at the D2 final four in the last decade.
