What's in the news ...

1. Alex Morgan was voted the 2018 U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year while national team defender Tierna Davidson earned Young Female Player of the Year honors. Morgan, the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year in 2012, finished 2018 with 18 goals in 19 games, the second most goals she has scored in a season. The 20-year-old Davidson, a junior at Stanford University, played for the U.S. U-20s earlier in the year but graduated to the senior team for which she started 12 games before being sidelined with an ankle injury in September.

2. New York City FC signed defender Maxime Chanot to a new multi-year contract. The French-born Luxembourg international came to NYCFC midway through it its second season in 2016 and has been a key to its success in the last three years. In 2018, Chanot scored two goals -- the winner against Philadelphia in the regular-season finale that secured a home playoff game in the Knockout Round and the only goal NYCFC scored in the semifinal series against Atlanta United.

3. The Vancouver Whitecaps hired Vanni Sartini and Phillip Dos Santos as assistant coaches and Youssef Dahha as goalkeeper coach under new head coach Marc Dos Santos. Phillip Dos Santos is Marc Dos Santos' younger brother and worked with him when the San Francisco Deltas won the 2017 NASL championship. He spent 2018 with Indy Eleven. Sartini came to the United States from his native Italy in 2016 to work as a coaching educator with U.S. Soccer. Dahha was the goalkeeper coach for the Ottawa Fury in 2018 after spending 14 seasons in the Montreal Impact organization.
