MLS Expansion Draft: FC Cincinnati will begin roster-building process in earnest

MLS clubs released the lists of players they have made available for selection by expansion FC Cincinnati in Tuesday afternoon’s Expansion Draft.

FC Cincinnati will be able to select up to five players -- no more than one player per team -- from the 18 teams required to make players available. Since Columbus, San Jose, Seattle, Sporting KC and Toronto FC each lost a player to LAFC in last year's Expansion Draft, they are exempt from this year's draft.

As part of the deal that sent Nigerian forward Fanendo Adi from Portland to FC Cincinnati in exchange for at least $850,000 in allocation money during the summer, FC Cincinnati is not expected to select a Timbers player. Adi is one of 13 players who played for FC Cincinnati in the USL last season and have been retained.

The lists of unprotected players include players whose options were not picked or are out of contract, including players who are eligible for MLS free agency or have announced plans to retire. Teams are required to include players with no-trade clauses on their lists of 11 exempt players. In addition, Homegrown players (on a club’s off-budget roster) and Generation Adidas players are automatically protected.
