Christian Pulisic: 'Bundesliga gave me an incredible platform'

In his first public appearance since it was announced that he will join Chelsea this summer on a $73 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund, Christian Pulisic said he was thankful for the opportunity he got at Dortmund and he would not lose focus in its remaining months.

"The Bundesliga gave me an incredible platform to start my career," Pulisic said at Dortmund's training camp in Marbella, Spain, on Saturday." I've had an amazing five years in Germany and I'm very thankful for that."

Dortmund entered the winter break in first place with a six-point lead in the Bundesliga and has also advanced to the round of 16 in both the UEFA Champions League and German Cup.

"We've got big goals and it could be a really special year for us," said Pulisic. "We all have a special feeling that we can really achieve something. We have the right players, the right system. We're top of the table, but that counts for nothing. We need to stay focused."

He said he was glad to have the decision on his next club out of the way.

“It is good to know that people know about my future," he said. I am really excited that I have the chance to be here for the rest of the season. I hope people understand my decision and that I am here 100 per cent. I am very focused to finish out the season with Dortmund.”

Pulisic's playing time has dropped this season but he said it did not factor in his decision to leave Dortmund, where his contract expired in 2020.

"I went through a few tough injuries at the beginning of the season,"  he said. "Players came in and did extremely well."

He said it was always his dream to play in the English Premier League and he admired Chelsea's style under new Italian manager Maurizio Sarri.

“I’ve always appreciated how they’ve played football," he said, "and it’s really nice how they play now, with their new coach. It fits me very well."
