English FA Cup: Duane Holmes helps Derby County earn replay with Southampton

League Championship team Derby County came back from two goals down to tie Southampton, 2-2, an earn a replay in their Engish FA Cup series against the Premier League.

A big threat for manager Frank Lampard's team was 24-year-old right winger Duane Holmes with a Man of the Match performance. Holmes was making just his fourth start since joining the Rams from Scunthorpe United in August had several good chances.

Born to an American father and an English mother in Georgia, he has lived in England since he was 4. He started his pro career at Huddersfield Town, then in the second-tier Championship, and spent the last two seasons at Scunthorpe in the third-tier League One.

“We were disappointed to go two goals down," Holmes told RamsTV. "They were two very avoidable goals, but I think we showed great character to come back. We are full of character and we have shown that plenty of times this season and we have come back again.”

Derby County has already beaten one team in cup play this season, knocking off Manchester United on penalty kicks in the League Cup at Old Trafford.

“We have beaten a Premier League team in the cup already this season," said Holmes. "I felt like we were good enough to do it again today but unfortunately we just didn’t get the goals.”

Derby County is tied for fifth place in the Championship, where it faces leader Leeds United on Friday.

I think we're scratching the bottom of the barrel here, when we begin to consider as ONE of our own who just happened to live in England for most of his life except for the first 4 years. I would rather read about someone who has learned his game in the US and earned through hard work a spot on an English team like Derby.

At least he was born here, unlike many of the german, americans who had maybe never been here before joining team USA. Yes I know, he did not get his soccer  here in USA.
