MLS SuperDraft: Teams pass on 21 of 48 picks in third and fourth rounds

If you had any doubts about the lack of interest many MLS clubs place on the college game these days, it was evident on Monday when teams passed on 21 of the 48 SuperDraft picks. That's up from 11 of 46 picks in 2018 and seven of 42 picks in 2017.

Eight teams passed on all their picks in the third and fourth rounds, and only 11 of the 24 teams made their full allotment of picks in the final two rounds.

For Real Salt Lake and Montreal, it marked the third year in a row they sat out the two rounds conducted by conference call. FC Cincinnati passed on the final two of the five draft picks acquired from Philadelphia for allocation money in the much-discussed move the Union made to skip the SuperDraft.

In the most unusual selection, which reflected the changing nature of the draft, FC Dallas took Columbia goalkeeper Dylan Castenheira with the 88th pick. The 2018 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year had already been signed by Atlanta United to a USL contract with second-year ATL UTD 2. (SuperDraft rules give FC Dallas MLS rights to Castenheira for two years.)

I find the MLS/USL relationship vv Superdraft the most interesting thing here. MLS draft contract gets to invalidate the USL contract? Why is that legal? I guess this exposes USL as the very minority partner in their relationship with MLS.
