What's in the news ...

1. Atlanta United defender Franco Escobar will be out 6-8 weeks after fracturing his right clavicle during training on Tuesday. Escobar, 23, was in and out of the starting lineup during the regular season but started as the right wing back in the playoffs and scored in the first leg of the Eastern Conference final against the New York Red Bulls and in the 2-0 win over Portland in MLS Cup. The Five Stripes started camp a week early to prepare for the Concacaf Champions League.

2. Rob Zarkos has been named Real Salt Lake's executive vice president of soccer operations. Zarkos, who was most recently the president of the Real Monarchs, RSL's USL team, will oversee the management of RSL, the Monarchs, the NWSL's Utah Royals and RSL's academy and will report to owner Dell Loy Hansen. General manager Craig Waibel will oversee the rosters and technical departments of RSL, the Monarchs and RSL academy program. Stephanie Lee was promoted from the Royals' managing director to relieve Waibel of the general manager responsibilities for their second season in the NWSL.

3. UNC Greensboro's new men's head coach is EJ O’Keeffe, a two-time Big South Coach of the Year at High Point, where he has served as head coach for the last four years. He played at UNCG for three seasons, serving as team captain and leading the Spartans to the 2008 Southern Conference championship and NCAA round of 16. Justin Maullin, the Spartans head coach for the last nine seasons, did not have his contract renewed.
