Sigi Schmid memorial service

A memorial service for Sigi Schmid, who died on Christmas Day at the age of 65, was held on Friday at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Manhattan Beach, California.

Jurgen Klinsmann, Alexi Lalas, Alejandro Moreno, Dean Wurzberger, Dale Ervine, Tibor Pelle, Tayt Ianni and Roland Schmid, Schmid's younger brother, were among those who spoke at the service.

Roland Schmid explained how their close German-American family made his brother -- his second father -- the person he was. An emotional Ervine told how much Sigi loved his UCLA players. Pelle spoke of their "sacred memories" of Schmid and of protecting their soccer village and saying good-bye.

Klinsmann spoke movingly how much his friendship with Schmid, who spoke his Swabian, meant, and told how he became his role model and learned how beloved his friend was when they went to Buenos Aires to see Boca Juniors-River Plate.
