Gregg Berhalter releases four players to get travel squad down to 23 players

The U.S. men's national team's travel squad for matches against Panama on Sunday in Glendale, Arizona, and Costa Rica Feb. 2 in San Jose, California, was reduced from 27 to 23 players.

There was one surprise: Kellyn Acosta, one of only six players in camp who took part in 2018 World Cup qualifying, was released to rejoin the Colorado Rapids.

Also cut were goalkeepers Alex Bono and Tyler Miller and defender Justen Glad. Greg Garza had earlier returned to FC Cincinnati with a quad injury.

Of the remaining 23 players, 11 are uncapped. Only four players have more than 10 caps: Michael Bradley (142), Gyasi Zardes (40), Paul Arriola (17) and Wil Trapp (11).

The team has been training since Jan. 7 at the Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. It left for Phoenix on Tuesday afternoon.

"We've had a great two weeks in Chula Vista focusing on building team culture, style of play and competing every day," Berhalter said in a statement. "The entire group has worked hard and brought an excellent mindset, and we thank them for the consistent effort thus far. We look forward to continuing to build on these ideas in Phoenix and measure our progress in the game against Panama."

The roster makes its challanges perfectly clear--low goal production and inexperience. For instance only 3 backs have any caps at all. Only 1 forward has any caps.

It, however, is the January camp and these are MLS players so its not surprising.

Zardes called up?...a mediocre MLS player who brings nothing to the table.

P,S. B.A. you want experienced players with caps that didn't deliver a laa Bradley et al...who cares about inexperience or "low goal production"...field anyone that delivers!!!

BG, we just went a whole year giving new players caps. So where are they? That is a rhetorical question. What I am getting at is that we wasted a year because the new coach has his own ideas about selections.
