MLS Preseason: In the news ...

1. Toronto FC wants to sign Sebastian Giovinco to long-term deal, but the Italian just might not be able to make what he has made when he was the highest-paid player in MLS. “I think we’ve made a significant offer to keep him but we’re still not there yet,” TFC president Bill Manning said Tuesday on TSN 1050 Radio. “When you ask me what my goal was, that’s certainly the goal, to re-sign him. We want him with us." Manning confirmed TFC received an offer for Giovinco but turned it down immediately. The Italian is entering the last year of his five-year contract.

2. Sporting KC head coach Peter Vermes said he did not originally intend to trade Ike Opara, who went to Minnesota United in a deal for upwards of $1 million in allocation money. The 2017 MLS Defender of the Year sought a new contract, like Matt Besler, Roger Espinoza, Graham Zusi and Ilie Sanchez, who got multi-year deals in 2018. Vermes said Opara, whose career has been hampered by injuries, received two new contracts since joining Sporting KC in 2013. "This was a very unique situation," he said, "Less than a year ago, he signed a contract and was already coming in asking for a new one.”

3. Mexican star Carlos Vela has moved on from the possibility of joining Barcelona. He said interest from Barca takes nothing away from the fact he is very happy at LAFC. "When something like this comes and they ask about your situation, it's always good because it means you're doing a good job," Vela said. "I take it as something positive, and after it did not happen, there's no problem."
