What They're Saying: Landon Donovan

“Since I was 16, everything was planned for me. You were told what to do, when to do it and how to do it, and that carried into my personal life, where I’d expect people I was dating to tell me where we’re going and when. That’s all I knew. So at some point I had this light – like, wait a minute, I can have my own ideas and make my own decisions. That was really powerful. … [Now] I really try hard not to just accept everything as society says it’s supposed to be.”

-- Landon Donovan, who has come out of retirement for a third time and is playing indoor soccer in San Diego, on the expectations that he felt from fans and coaches that took him years, and therapy, to come to terms with it. His pro career started out at the age of 16 at Germany's Bayer Leverkusen, which he says he "didn’t give a f***" about and wanted to leave as quickly as possible so he would find somewhere to play. If he’s enjoying it, more power to him. Wish I still lived in San Diego. The teams from 1983 to 1991 were such fun to watch!!!  They picked up the slack after all of the outdoor leagues had folded.
