Liga MX teams sweep New York Red Bulls and Houston Dynamo

The New York Red Bulls scored two goals in just nine minutes to take a 2-0 lead over Santos Laguna and even their Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League quarterfinal series.

Santos then doubled that, needing just nine minutes late in the second half to score four goals and win the series on aggregate, 6-2.

The Red Bulls got off to a fast start thanks to Homegrown Player signing Omir Fernandez's first pro goal after just four minutes. Danny Royer, who set up Fernandez's goal, then evened the series five minutes later, taking passes from Florian Valot and Bradley Wright-Phillips to score.

But the Red Bulls started to tire in the second half, and Santos defender Jose Abella scored after the Red Bulls failed to clear a ball in the 72nd minute. Three more goals followed in rapid succession, the second of Brian Lozano's two goals coming on a strike from the Santos half to wrap up the game in the 81st minute.

The series sweep gave Santos six victories in six meetings with MLS teams in the CCL knockout stage, four of them by four-goal margins. The closest call came in 2013 when Santos won at Seattle, 1-0, but settled for a 1-1 tie with the Sounders at the Estadio Corona.
