What They're Saying: Matias Almeyda

“Magic doesn’t exist in soccer and here you repeatedly see mistakes that happened last season. My decision to come to San Jose was because it’s a long-term plan. I didn’t think that today we would be first. Simply, I am looking for a style of play and even if they were to score 10 goals, I’d have the same mentality because I like a certain style of soccer."

-- First-year San Jose Earthquakes coach Matias Almeyda after the Quakes lost at home to LAFC, 5-0. He described the game as "disastrous," the first time he ever lost by five goals as a player or coach. The defeat followed losses of 2-1, 3-0 and 4-1 in the Quakes' first three games and extended their winless streak dating back to last season to 12 games.
