USL Championship: What's in the news ...

1. New Mexico United's roaring start to its first season continued when it crushed the Real Monarchs, 5-1, in front of 12,327 fans at Isotopes Park. New Mexico United is tied with Timbers 2 for the Western Conference lead. Spaniard Santi Moar scored a first-half hat trick to give him seven goals, tied for the league scoring lead with Tulsa's 20-year-old Brazilian, Luca Lobo. New Mexico United is second in the USL Championship in attendance with an average of 11,184 fans a game.

2. Birmingham Legion FC handed Saint Louis FC its first defeat with a 3-2 decision, marking the second game in a row it won by that scoreline on the road. Alabaman J.J. Williams, on loan from the Columbus Crew, scored twice in six minutes off the bench to pace Legion FC. Despite the defeat, Saint Louis FC held on to the Eastern Conference lead when Tampa Bay had to settle for a 1-1 tie at home with Louisville City.

3. The Phoenix Rising won its first game after four ties with a 2-0 victory at El Paso Locomotive FC. Junior Flemmings, who came over from the Tampa Bay Rowdies, and former Toronto FC striker Ben Spencer scored for the 2018 Western Conference champion. The game marked the debut of former U.S. international Jerome Kiesewetter for El Paso.
