U.S. U-20 World Cup Watch: McKenzie sidelined with appendicitis

Mark McKenzie was slated to make his first start of the 2019 MLS season for the Philadelphia Union in place of suspended Auston Trusty on Saturday against Montreal, but instead he underwent surgery for appendicitis on Saturday morning. The 2019 Rookie of the Year finalist had taken ill on Friday.

McKenzie, the only U.S. U-20 player called into the senior national team's January camp, was beaten out for a starting job by Jack Elliott. McKenzie’s only minutes have been a 12-minute stint for the Union against the LA Galaxy and in a 90-minute start for Bethlehem Steel in the USL.

Julian Araujo, a reserve during the Concacaf U-20 Championship campaign, started his first game for the LA Galaxy in its 2-1 win over the Houston Dynamo. The 17-year-old right back was starting in place of Rolf Feltscher, sidelined with a groin injury. He has played three games since signing with the Galaxy in March.

Uly Llanez, who signed with Wolfsburg three weeks ago, isn't yet eligible to play for the German club in official competition, but he scored two goals for Wolfsburg U19 in a  4-1 friendly win over JFV Calenberger Land.
