Saturday morning: What's in the news ...

1. Youth soccer participation declined 4 percent in 2018, according to the National Sporting Goods Association’s release on the 2019 edition of its sports participation in the U.S. report. It also reported that overall youth team sports participation (ages 7-17) remained relatively flat (+0.3 percent) from 2017-2018 and tackle football increased by nearly 4 percent. Of the 57 sports and activities surveyed, 26 increased and 31 declined.

2. LA Galaxy midfielder Romain Alessandrini is expected to be out until September following surgery to repair a knee injury. The Frenchman needed meniscus root repair after suffering the injury in the LA Galaxy's game against Philadelphia on April 13. He has 24 goals and 22 assists in 61 appearances since joining the Galaxy from Marseille in 2017.
3.  D.C. United promoted Stewart Mairs to the position of technical director. He served as the D.C. United’s director of soccer strategy and analysis since 2016 focusing on the recruitment of new talent and overseeing scouting and preparations for upcoming MLS matches. He will replace Dane Murphy, who left United after four months.
