U.S. Open Cup: FC over SC for Orange County bragging rights

Paul Caligiuri's Orange County FC is one of only two amateur teams to survive the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup -- down from nine in 2018 -- when it beat the USL Championship's Orange County SC in a shootout after twice rallying from a goal down, the second time two minutes into stoppage time at the end of regulation.

On Tuesday, the amateur Florida Soccer Soldiers beat the Charlotte Independence in similar fashion, advancing in a shootout against the USL Championship's Charlotte Independence after twice coming from behind.

U.S. Open Cup Schedule:
Third Round

The FC-SC clash at Irvine's Championship Soccer Stadium appeared headed to overtime when Darwin Jones, the former Seattle Sounders' Homegrown Player, put OCSC up with a header in the 87th minute.

But Englishman Ryan Holland scored two minutes into stoppage time to send the game to overtime. The match ended 2-2 after 120 minutes but only after OCSC twice had shots cleared off the line by OCFC defenders.

The shootout featured a battle of young keepers: OCFC's 20-year-old David Preys, a LA Galaxy academy product now at Cal State Northridge, vs. OCSC's 17-year-old Aaron Cervantes, who was in contention to make the U.S. U-17 national team that has qualified for the 2019 U-17 World Cup.

Preys made the only stop, saving the first attempt by OCSC's Aodhan Quinn, to send OCFC into the third round, where it will play the Las Vegas Lights, coached by Eric Wynalda, Caligiuri's teammate on the 1990 and 1994 U.S. World Cup teams.

-- The only other non-USL Championship team to advance on Wednesday was Forward Madison. Peter Wilt's new USL League One team beat the El Paso Locomotive, 3-0, on the road. Japanese-Colombian Jiro Barriga Toyama led the Flamingos with a goal and an assist.

The closest any other amateur team came to advancing was the Des Moines Menace, which fell at home to Saint Louis FC in a shootout. The hero was 18-year-old goalkeeper Patrick Schulte with three saves in the shootout in his first start for Saint Louis FC. The U.S. U-18 keeper is playing on a USL academy contract until he enrolls at Saint Louis University.

-- Wynalda and Caligiuri will be joined in the third round of the Open Cup by a third member of the 1990 World Cup team: Steve Trittschuh, whose Colorado Colorado Springs Switchbacks edged FC Denver, 1-0. Abraham Rodriguez, 16, was in goal for the Switchbacks.

-- A fourth member of the Italia '90 team came close to taking his team into the third round. John Harkes' Greenville Triumph SC (USL League One) lost to Charleston Battery, 2-1, on a goal by Ian Svantesson on minute into stoppage time.

-- The third round will consist of 19 teams from the USL Championship and one each from the USL League One, NPSL and UPSL. In 2018, 15 teams from the USL were joined by four from the NPSL, three from the PDL (now USL League Two), one from the UPSL and one from the North Texas Premier Soccer Association.
