U.S. provisional Gold Cup roster contains several surprise names

Concacaf released the 40-player provisional rosters for the 2019 Gold Cup from which 16 teams must select their 23 players for the tournament.

Gold Cup: Preliminary Lists

Gregg Berhalter's list didn't include John Brooks, considered the USA's best center back, or DeAndre Yedlin, who captained the USA in its last game against Chile in March.

Brooks hasn't played since late April with a knee injury. Yedlin recently underwent groin surgery.

Included in the team was Tyler Boydof Turkish club MKE Ankaragucu, who was recently granted a switch of association from New Zealand to the USA.

Four other players who have never been part of a senior national team camp:

-- Marlon Fossey, who had an excellent preseason for Fulham before a knee injury sidelined him for the 2018-19 Premier League season;
-- Andrew Gutman, the 2018 Hermann Trophy winner now playing in the USL Championship at the Charlotte Independence on loan from Scottish champion Celtic;
-- Duane Holmes, who is playing for Derby County, which faces Aston Villa in the English League Championship promotion final;
-- Miles Robinson, who is starting for reigning MLS champion Atlanta United.

Joe Gyau was called up for the first since a knee injury suffered in a U.S. match against Ecuador in 2014 derailed him shortly after making his first appearance for Dortmund. He spent four seasons in the lower divisions of German soccer before moving up to last-place 2. Bundesliga team Duisburg this season.

Berhalter is expected to name this week his squad for a pre-Gold Cup camp that will begin next week.
