At age 17, Lionel Messi led Argentina to the 2005 U-20 World Cup title -- after it lost its opener to the Sigi Schmid-coached USA.

Messi came on as a halftime sub after the USA took a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute with a goal by Chad Barrett and was shutout by the U.S. defense. Messi started the rest of Argentina's games, scored six goals, and won the Golden Ball and Golden Shoe. The USA tied Germany (0-0) and beat Egypt (1-0) before falling to Italy, 3-1, in the round of 16. Here's how Messi played against the USA.
