U.S. Gold Cup roster: Decision Day arrives for Berhalter

The USA will be without its two most influential European-based players -- Christian Pulisic and Tyler Adams -- for its first Gold Cup tune-up on Wednesday against Jamaica at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.

With 13 days before the USA opens Gold Cup action on June 18 against Guyana in St. Paul, Minnesota, Gregg Berhalter has plenty of time to fine-tune his team, but Wednesday's game carries more immediate importance.

It will be the last chance for players in camp to impress the U.S. coach before he must submit the 23-player Gold Cup roster to Concacaf by its midnight deadline. (The team should be announced to the public on Thursday.)

Berhalter has been meticulous in his preparation for his three national team camps -- the January camp with MLS players, the March camp at which foreign-based players were introduced and the camp in Annapolis that began a week ago with a mix of Gold Cup and U-23 hopefuls -- so he has a good idea who he wants in what role.

"I think there will be a few positions that are up for grabs," he said on Tuesday, "but not many."

The week began with 28 players eligible for the Gold Cup fighting for 21 spots -- the 23 minus two for Pulisic and Adams. Jackson Yueill joined the camp after the San Jose Earthquakes' match at D.C. United on Saturday but isn't on the 40-player provisional list.

Of the 28 players, there was a question mark about Sebastian Lletget, who injured his hamstring in the LA Galaxy's match on Sunday night. (Berhalter said a decision would be taken about Lletget by the end of Tuesday.)

Assuming Berhalter takes two players at every field position, plus three goalkeepers, and everyone is healthy, here are some key decisions he will have to make or have made ...

-- Who's the odd-man out among the five center backs?
-- Who's the odd-man out among the three left backs?
-- Who are the two midfielders from among four candidates he'll take along with Weston McKennie, Michael Bradley, Wil Trapp and Pulisic?
-- Who are four wingers he'll take from among six candidates? (They include Tyler Boyd, who just filed a switch of association after beginning his international career with New Zealand.)
-- Perhaps the most interesting one, who are the two forwards he'll take from among Gyasi Zardes, who has started all four U.S. games in 2019, Jozy Altidore, who hasn't played since the USA-T&T game in 2017, and Josh Sargent, who was eligible to play in the Under-20 World Cup?
