Saturday morning: What's in the news ...

1. Valentin Sabella, who starred for the UPSL's Florida Soccer Soldiers in their U.S. Open Cup run, signed with the Charlotte Independence, which the Soccer Soldiers beat in the second round. Sabella, 19,  scored game-tying goal in the 119th minute of stoppage time for the Soccer Soldiers, who were playing with 10 men. He turned down several Division I college scholarship offers to play for the Soccer Soldiers, leading them to back-to-back first-place finishes in the UPSL's Florida South Division.

2. Former Tennessee striker Bunny Shaw signed a two-year contract with Bordeaux in France, where she is representing Jamaica at the Women's World Cup. Shaw helped the Vols reach the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 2018, leading them with 13 goals and six assists. She scored 19 goals in 13 Concacaf qualifiers for the Reggae Girlz, who are playing in their first World Cup. Bordeaux finished fourth in the French first division in 2018-19, its third season in the top flight.

3. Atlanta United signed academy director Tony Annan to a multi-year contract extension. He has been with the club since April 2016 and oversaw the launch of the academy program that year, on the eve of its debut in MLS. Atlanta United's U-17s won the Development Academy in 2017. Its U-14s recently captured the championship at the Manchester City Cup. Five academy players have signed MLS contracts with Atlanta United and three others have USL pro contracts with Atlanta United 2.
