What They're Saying: Gregg Berhalter

"When [Jozy Altidore is] fit and he's strong, there's not a better striker than him in America. So it's hard to say, 'OK, here's a 19-year-old that is going to displace Jozy Altidore, even though he has a bright future ahead of him.' And the way we frame this is we're saying, 'Okay, he's participated in a U-20 World Cup already. This is an opportunity for a guy like Sebastian Soto to show his self, his game on the world stage.' And he's done a great job of taking advantage of that. Now if we view Josh as being more advanced than the U-20 level, that doesn't mean he's ready to be a full international. There's space in between that. In between that comes the Olympic team, and Olympic qualifying, and perhaps the Olympics. In my mind, Josh is really close and has a lot of talent. If we had extra space on the roster, he'd be with us. But we don't."

-- U.S. national team coach Gregg Berhalter on why Josh Sargent did not go to the Under-20 World Cup and then did not make the Gold Cup roster on which he took Altidore and Gyasi Zardes. (ESPN FC)

Agree with him on not going to the U20, don’t agree with him about not making the Gold Cup roster. I’m pulling for you coach and team.

More drivel from another talking head. I hope Jozy pouts today like he does half the time he plays. He probably make G.B. look good today but, it is about the future not, today.

Ouch!  Doesn't Berhalter get the idea that USMNT needs a severe overhaul and an infusion of capable well-trained YOUNGER players, many of whom have grown up away from MLS?  For me, this is a very telling and unsettling comment by Berhalter, and I do not like what it tells.

BS. Altidore score 2 goals in 70 EPL appearances, one British newspaper ranked him #1 of the 100 worst Forwards of all time. Sargent should 100% be on the team, in front him, Zardes & Morris. If Berhalter can't see that he's inept.

We will see. The Coach makes the call and will either reap the results or pay the Piper.

    3-0 at halftime....outstanding!
I'd take 6 of those kids from the U20 team right now.

I disagree. Watching Jozy has made me a not Jozy fan.  He is all about Jozy and much less about the team. There have been too many times when his play, or lack thereof, has hurt us to overcome his good minutes.
