Tyler Adams, who has emerged as one
of the most influential members of the U.S. national team at the age of 20, has been forced to withdraw from the Gold Cup because of a groin injury.
Adams was replaced on the U.S. Gold Cup roster by FC Dallas right back Reggie Cannon. The USA begins play next Tuesday against Guyana in St. Paul, Minnesota.
New head coach Gregg Berhalter introduced a new system for the national team in January with a hybrid position of right back and central midfielder. Berhalter started Nick Lima at the position in wins over Panama and Costa Rica but said the system was introduced with his full squad in mind.
Adams, who joined RB Leipzig in January and immediately stepped into its starting lineup, started the 1-0 win over Ecuador in March but then returned to RB Leipzig and missed the 1-1 tie with Chile.
Adams had been excused from participating in the U.S. camp in Annapolis and the two friendly games against Jamaica and Venezuela, both shutout losses. But on Monday, the 20-year-old midfielder was diagnosed with what U.S. Soccer termed in a statement as "acute on chronic groin issues" that will require a minimum of 6-8 week recovery period.
Adams, who played three seasons for MLS's New York Red Bulls before moving to Leipzig in January, played his first game for RB Leipzig on Jan. 27 against Fortuna Duesseldorf. In his first nine appearances, RB Leipzig won six games and tied the other three to solidify third place in the Bundesliga that puts it in the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League. German fans voted Adams the Bundesliga's Rookie of the Month for February.
In early March, Leipzig coach Ralf Rangnick told Kicker. "Whenever Tyler's been on the field, we've won. We also beat Hoffenheim in the second half when he was on the field. We're averaging three points per game with Adams. Obviously, that's not just down to him, but the manner in which we play when he's on the field. We knew what an extraordinary character he is for his young age. The team welcomed him immediately without any reservations."
But Adams was then sidelined and missed all of April with what Schalke 04 termed as a groin injury. He returned for the final Bundesliga match of the season and started in the German Cup final against Bayern Munich, exiting in the 65th minute of the game Bayern won on May 25.
Berhalter experimented with a five players in the back against Jamaica, starting Paul Arriola at right wing back, but he reverted to his preferred 4-1-4-1 lineup against Venezuela with Lima at right back/central midfielder.
