In his first start for the LA Galaxy, Efrain Alvarez scored his first two goals for the Galaxy, leading it to a 3-0 win over Orange County FC.
Alvarez scored on a free kick to break a scoreless tie in the 55th minute and added the
second goal six minutes later when he tapped a pass from Favio Alvarez into an empty net.
“Honestly, it was a once in a lifetime feeling that you can’t compare with any
other," said the 16-year-old Alvarez, who was making his Open Cup debut.
Alvarez did not play for the Galaxy after signing in 2017 but has played 121 minutes off the bench this season.
He was away for parts of April and May with Mexico's U-17 national team.
Galaxy coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto said Alvarez was practicing on free kicks in practice on
“It’s one the characteristics he has, the way he shoots," he said, "And yes, we were practicing it yesterday, but the truth is I think it has to do more with his
quality then practice.”
Barros Schelotto is giving Alvarez more minutes little by little.
"He is 16 years old," he said. "He’s about to turn 17 and he plays like
a professional but tactically and physically it’s things that he will build on as he gets older, and he still needs to continue growing.”
