New Mexico United and Saint Louis FC knock out MLS teams

Expansion team New Mexico United and Saint Louis FC are the only lower division teams left in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after they knocked off the Colorado Rapids and Chicago Fire, respectively, in the fourth round.

New Mexico United, which is leading the USL Championship's Western Conference, beat the Rapids in a shootout after their game ended in a 2-2 tie. Jamaican Kevaughn Frater, USL Championship's top scorer with 10 goals, scored from outside the area in the fifth minute of stoppage time to force overtime.

Saint Louis FC knocked off the Fire, 2-1, in a game moved from World Wide Technology Soccer Park, which experienced minor flooding, to Lindenwood University, where 4,456 fans showed up at Hunter Stadium.

STLFC, which joined the USL in 2015, jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 21 minutes on goals by Austin Martz and Guy Abend and held on after Nemanja Nikolic's penalty kick to beat an MLS team for the first time in three tries.
