U.S. Open Cup: Atlanta United survives scare against Battery

MLS champion Atlanta United completed the field in the round of 16 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup when it beat the USL Championship's Charleston Battery, 3-1, on Thursday in their match played behind closed doors at Kennesaw State's Fifth Third Bank Stadium.

A pair of subs won the game for the Five Stripes. Justin Meram set up Brandon Vazquez for two goals in the second overtime period. The Battery opened the scoring in the 20th minute on a goal by Ian Svantesson and it held on to the lead until Romario Williams' equalizer in the 78th minute.

Atlanta United will head to Columbus next Tuesday to face the Crew in the round of 16.
