1. The Portland Timbers signed head coach Giovanni Savarese and his coaching staff
to multi-year contract extensions. In his first season,
Savarese led the Timbers to MLS Cup 2018, where they fell to Atlanta United. Savarese's staff includes Carlos Llamosa, Miles Joseph, Guillermo “Memo” Valencia and Shannon Murray. 2. FC Cincinnati made its first international signing since Dutchman Gerard Nijkamp
was named general manager. It acquired
30-year-old defender Maikel van der Werff, who spent the last seven seasons in the Dutch Eredivisie with PEC Zwolle (2013-15) and Vitesse (2015-19). 3. The Columbus Crew hired Ezra Hendrickson as an assistant coach
on Caleb Porter’s first-team technical staff. Hendrickson played for the Crew under the
late Sigi Schmid from 2006-2008. He then worked for Schmid as an assistant coach at the Seattle Sounders and LA Galaxy. He was also the head coach of Sounders FC 2 for three years (2015-2017).
