Newcastle Signs Inter's Martins

No team in the Premiership was more in need of a new striker than Newcastle United. The Tyneside club now looks set to get its wish later as Inter Milan striker Obafemi Martins flew this morning to complete a medical exam and finalize a $19 million deal. The 21-year-old striker was expected to be in the crowd for tonight's UEFA Cup qualifier against Latvian side Ventspils; he could go straight into the squad for Sunday's game at Aston Villa. Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder has been pursuing the striker all summer. He became available after Inter added Hernan Crespo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to an already full striking roster. Roeder noted that while several strikers have been linked with the club this summer, "[Martins] has always been the man I wanted," he said. "That was the one I targeted, I wanted the pace." Why? Because the striker is just 21, and had a fantastic scoring record at Inter Milan in three seasons. Martins now joins former Inter teammate Emre at St. James Park.
