Saturday morning: What's in the news ...

1. The Utah Royals and Portland Thorns played to a 2-2 tie in front of 15,931 fans at Rio Tinto Stadium in the first NWSL game since the U.S. Women's World Cup champions returned to league action. Christen Press scored the first Utah goal after megging her defender and Kelley O'Hara assisted on the tying goal. The Thorns' second goal came on a Becky Sauerbrunn own goal.

2. The Philadelphia Union acquired goalkeeper Joe Bendik from the Columbus Crew for a second-round pick in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft and $50,000 in GAM. In 2019, Bendik played six games without winning a game for the Crew, which signed Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room to replace Zack Steffen, who is now at Fortuna Duesseldorf on loan from Manchester City. Bendik has started 173 games in eight MLS seasons.

3. Sac Republic FC goalkeeper Josh Cohen was transferred to Israeli club Maccabi Haifa. He was in his fifth season in the USL and earned second-team all-league honors in 2018 when Republic FC finished with the best defensive record in the Western Conference. The UC San Diego product joins Maccabi Haifa ahead of its Europa League qualifying series next week against French club Strasbourg.
