Leagues Cup: DaMarcus Beasley rolls back the clock

The Houston Dynamo exited the Leagues Cup to Club America, but not before a stunning goal by 37-year-old defender DaMarcus Beasley in the 85th minute tied the score and sent it to penalty kicks.

After a 1-1 draw, Club America prevailed, 6-5, on penalties to move on to the semifinals against fellow Liga MX club Tigres, a 1-0 winner over Real Salt Lake.
Beasley, who is retiring at the end of the 2019 MLS season, was wide open on the left flank and ran on to a pass from defender Kevin Garcia inside the penalty area and blasted his shot from a sharp angle rocket into the upper right corner of the net, giving Aguilas keeper Agustin Marchesin no chance.

Houston kept the game close despite starting just one player who had started in its 3-1 win at Toronto FC on Saturday. The game was the Dynamo's 13th in 40 days.

“We are going to complete 14 games in 42 days on Saturday," said Dynamo coach Wilmer Cabrera. "That’s difficult. That’s difficult for any human, anybody. So, the players are carrying a lot of work, a lot of games plus four players took part in the Gold Cup, so extra games, extra traveling -- Jamaica, Houston, LA -- and then also we have two players that were traveling for documents and they did not train for 21 days. So, all that counts at the end of the day because they are not ready. They are overloaded. We knew that but we are not going to come over here making excuses. We have to play and we have to deal with that.”

The shootout went to seven rounds and was decided when former LA Galaxy forward Giovani dos Santos, making his America debut, scored and Houston defender Sam Junqua’s shot went over the bar.

RSL was the only one of the four MLS teams to start close to its first team and had its chances against Tigres, hitting the post twice.

Tigres won on a goal by Chilean Eduardo Vargas, who scored on a shot from distance off a pass from Enner Valencia.

Tigres will return to Houston on Aug. 20 to face Club America. In the other semifinal, the LA Galaxy will host Cruz Azul the same evening.
