USL Championship: What's in the news ...

1. The first-place Phoenix Rising opened up a nine-point lead in the Western Conference when it beat second-place Reno 1868, 4-2. The win extended the Rising's USL-record winning streak to 14 games and 13 games on “Dollar Beer Night” at Casino Arizona Field.  Solomon Asante scored twice from the penalty spot to give him 18 goals for the season, one more than Nashville SC's Daniel Rios, and the Rising's all-time scoring record with 32 goals.

2. The expansion New Mexico United broke its own attendance record for the third time when it drew 15,247 fans at Isotopes Park for its 2-2 tie with LA Galaxy II. United, which leads the USL Championship with an average of 13,078 fans a game, twice came back from a goal down against Galaxy II, which played the last 75 minutes with 10 players after U.S. U-17 Adam Saldana, making his first pro start, was red carded.

3. The Birmingham Legion extended its shutout streak to six games with a 1-0 victory over Memphis 901 to move into 10th place in the Eastern Conference, seven points below the playoff line. Goalkeeper Matt Van Oekel has eight shutouts for the season, tied for fifth in the USL Championship.
