USL Championship: What's in the news ...

1. The Phoenix Rising defeated Sacramento Republic FC, 2-1, for its 15th straight win -- extending its USL Championship record -- and 14th straight win on $1 Beer Night at Casino Arizona Field, where another sellout crowd (7,403 fans) turned out. Defender Joey Farrell scored the winning goal late in the first half, atoning for a bad backpass that led to Cameron Iwasa's goal for Sac Republic in the second minute. Captain Solomon Asante's assist on Farrell's goal gave him 12 on the campaign. Asante leads the USL Championship in goals (18) and assists.

2. The New York Red Bulls II opened up a four-point lead atop the Eastern Conference with a pair of road wins, 2-1 at Nashville SC and 5-1 at Swope Park Rangers. In Kansas City, midfielder Sean McSherry scored twice in the first half of his first pro start. He had not played in three months. Recent signing Omar Sowe out of Harrison High School came on in the 65th minute to make his pro debut.

3. Resurgent Louisville City won its fourth straight game with a 1-0 win over North Carolina FC on a goal by Magnus Rasmussen in the 55th minute on a header off a corner kick by Oscar Jimenez. The two-time defending champions had won just one of their previous seven games. They are in seventh place in the Eastern Conference.
