2. Toronto names Johnston head coach

Johnston takes charge of MLS's first Canadian team less than two months after being fired as New York Red Bulls coach. With three games remaining in the 2005 regular season, he was promoted from assistant coach to head coach with the MetroStars, replacing Bob Bradley. He led them to the playoffs as it won two games and tied the third. This season, Johnston was 3-4-7 with the New York club. When it was sold to Austrian firm Red Bull and renamed the Red Bulls on the eve of the 2006 season, Johnston admitted he didn't see a future for him in New York.
Johnston scored more than 300 goals in an international career that saw him play in the 1990 World Cup with Scotland and become most famously the first prominent Catholic to play for Protestant-backed Glaswegian club Rangers in many years. After first saying he'd play for the Catholic club Celtic following two years in France with Nantes, Johnston changed his mind and joined Rangers, which he led to three straight Scottish league titles. His playing resume included stints at Patrick Thistle, Watford, Celtic, Nantes, Rangers, Everton, Hearts, Falkirk and finally MLS's Kansas City Wizards, with whom he won the 2000 MLS title.
