Saturday morning: What's in the news ...

1. The first-place Portland Thorns suffered their first loss in NWSL play in two months, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Utah Royals in front of 10,897 fans at Rio Tinto Stadium. Two U.S. World Cup champions teamed up for the goal, Christen Press playing a cross from the left wing that Becky Sauerbrunn headed across the goal inside the post. It was just her sixth pro goal in a club career that dates back to 2009. She has no goals in 167 caps for the USA.

2. The Seattle Sounders signed Tacoma Defiance players Nick Hinds and Shandon Hopeau to short-term agreements, under the terms of MLS's Extreme Hardship rules that allow teams with less than 14 outfield players available or fewer than two goalkeepers available to bring in reinforcements. The Sounders had 10 players called up for international duty and have three others out with injuries or suspensions.

3. U.S. midfielder Danny Williams signed as a free agent with Cypriot club Pafos FC after being released by Huddersfield Town following its relegation from the Premier League. The German-raised Williams played for Freiburg and Hoffenheim before moving to England to play for Reading in 2013. The last of his 23 caps for the USA came in the 1-1 tie against Portugal in its first match after being eliminated from the 2018 World Cup.
