Concacaf Nations League: Backup Curacao keeper dies in sleep at team hotel

Jarzinho Pieter, the 31-year-old backup goalkeeper to the Columbus Crew's Eloy Room on Curacao's national team, died in his sleep early Monday morning in Haiti.

Pieter complained about feeling ill and went to a doctor for treatment after the team arrived in Haiti Sunday night for Tuesday's Concacaf Nations League group match. He fell asleep in his hotel bed, where he was found dead. Initial reports out of Haiti were that he died of a heart attack.

Pieter played for Vesta in Curacao and had 12 caps. Most of his teammates are based in the Netherlands or other European countries.

Curacao reached the 2019 Gold Cup quarterfinals, losing to the United States, 1-0. It beat Haiti, 1-0, in their Concacaf Nations League in Willemstad on Saturday.
