Unbeaten Detroit City FC clinches NPSL Members Cup

Unbeaten Detroit City FC clinched the new NPSL Members Cup with a 1-0 win over the Michigan Stars on Wednesday.

Le Rouge is 8-0-1 with a game to play and has a five-point lead on the New York Cosmos.

South African Yazeed Matthews scored in the 66th minute for the game's only goal, his fifth of the season.

Matthews played at Coastal Carolina and for the NPSL's AFC Ann Arbor, is second in scoring in the competition behind Chattanooga FC's Joao Costa with six goals.

Goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher earned his sixth shutout in Members Cup play. He attended Detroit Mercy and spent time at Grythyttans IF, a Swedish sixth-tier club popular with Americans, before returning home.

A 2-1 at the Cosmos on Saturday put DCFC in the driver's seat. Matthews had a goal and an assist in that game.

The future of the NPSL Members Cup is uncertain. Detroit City FC, the Michigan Stars and Chattanooga FC have all announced plans to move to the new NISA in 2020.
