USL Championship: First-year Birmingham and Austin advance in playoffs

First-year Birmingham Legion FC twice came from behind before upsetting North Carolina FC, 3-2, on a late winner from J.J. Williams in the Eastern Conference play-in round.

Zach Herivaux, who is on loan from the New England Revolution, scored to make it  at 2-2 before assisting on the winner by Williams, who signed a Generation adidas contract out of Kentucky and is on loan from the Columbus Crew.

Austin Bold FC scored in either half on goals by Ema Twumasi and Sean McFarlane to beat the LA Galaxy II, 2-0, in its playoff debut.

The Charleston Battery, the 2012 USL PRO champion, was one of two road teams to advance thanks to a shootout win at Ottawa after their match ended 1-1.

Sacramento Republic FC, the 2014 champion, overcame a goal by Devon Sandoval after 13 seconds to beat expansion New Mexico United, 2-1.

Thomas Enevoldsen’s late goal decided the match that drew almost 10,000 fans at Papa Murphy’s Park, the first since Sac Republic was awarded an MLS franchise for 2022.

The playoffs resume Saturday with eight games in the conference quarterfinals.

    I wish we knew what the attendance was at these matches.
