Darren Powell leaves San Antonio FC after four years as head coach

Darren Powell, San Antonio FC's head coach since its inception in 2016, is out.

The USL Championship club announced that Powell left by mutual agreement after four seasons. On the final weekend of the season, it dropped to 11th in the Western Conference and failed to make the playoffs for the third time in four years.

Powell, who leaves with a record of 53-43-36 in league play, came to expansion San Antonio FC from Orlando City, where he oversaw the MLS club's Development Academy. Before that, he coached for nine seasons at Elon University.

“We are grateful for all of Darren’s hard work over the past four seasons, and the passion and class with which he has served San Antonio FC and our city,” said SAFC managing director Tim Holt. “Our focus now shifts to identifying and appointing a new leader to guide the next phase of our club’s sporting development and performance," Holt added.
