U.S. national team head coach Gregg
Berhalter called in nine European-based players for the decisive Concacaf Nations League matches against Canada on Nov. 15 in Orlando and Cuba on Nov. 19 in the Cayman Islands.
The squad includes Christian Pulisic, who has caught fire since his return to Chelsea following Nations League matches against Cuba and Canada in October, and Sergino Dest, who will get his first chance to officially be cap-tied since announcing his allegiance to the USA over his native Netherlands.
A late scratch was Fortuna Duesseldorf goalkeeper Zack Steffen, who has been playing well in the Bundesliga but bothered by a knee ailment. Also out are RB Leipzig midfielder Tyler Adams, who has not played a game for club or country in more than five months with various injuries, and Timothy Weah, who suffered a serious groin injury after playing only two games for new French club Lille.
The final additions to the squad will likely be players competing in MLS Cup. U.S. regulars include Toronto FC captain Michael Bradley and Seattle's Jordan Morris and Cristian Roldan.
Berhalter has been working with a group of players who have finished their MLS seasons in Bradenton, Florida, and the team will shift to Orlando on Sunday.
Five of the 20 players in Bradenton will leave to join the U.S. U-23s for two games in the Canary Islands. They are defender Mark McKenzie, midfielders Brenden Aaronson and Djordje Mihailovic, and forwards Jeremy Ebobisse and Jonathan Lewis.
The final squad will be confirmed Monday following MLS Cup.
"We are happy to be able to call on this core group of players, especially with the significance of these upcoming matches." Berhalter said. "They have been performing well for their clubs, and we look forward to preparing to get the results we need against Canada and Cuba. As competitors, these are the moments you relish. We will be ready."
