Beach Soccer World Cup: Perera and Toth lead USA in fifth trip to finals

The USA opens against Switzerland on Thursday in their opening match at the 2019 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Asuncion, Paraguay.

Five players return from the USA's last Beach World Cup appearance in 2013 in Tahiti, including captain Nick Perera and goalkeeper Chris Toth, who were named among the Top 50 Beach Soccer players in the world for a third consecutive year.

Also returning for head coach Eddie Soto are Alessandro Canale, Jason Leopoldo and Ryan Futagaki, who also played for the USA at the 1999 World Youth Championship in Nigeria. Leopoldo and Futagaki are among four former UCLA players on the team. Nine of the 12 players hail from California.

The USA, which is 3-8 in four previous trips to the finals, will also face Japan on Saturday and the hosts Paraguay on Monday in Group A action.
