SA Library: An impressive delivery of insight and intriguing info on U.S. soccer in Beau Dure's latest book

The first line of this provocatively titled work: "I'd be perfectly happy to be wrong about this." What follows in Beau Dure's latest book is an impressive delivery of intriguing information, insight and analyses about soccer in America -- past, present and future. Dure's section on pro/rel should be required reading for those on both sides of the issue.

Why the U.S. Men Will Never Win the World Cup: A Historical and Cultural Reality Check. by Beau Dure. Available in hardcover and Kindle.

Becoming Coach Jake: A Story of Overcoming the Odds, on the Soccer Field and Beyond by Martin Jacobson with Bill Saporito

Martin Jacobson, head coach of New York City's Martin Luther King Jr. High School's boys team since 1994, has been the subject of a Dan Rather-reported "60 Minutes" feature ("The Winner"), a full-length documentary (“Coach Jake"), and a reality series ("Kings of the City"). Now Jacobson, who's aiming for his 19th New York City public school championship, has published his memoir. It details his remarkable coaching success with multi-cultural teams of Manhattan immigrant boys and the various ways in which he's helped hundreds of inner city kids negotiate the challenges of settling in the USA. It's also a riveting account of his recovery from a heroin addiction and redemption from the criminality that it caused before he rebounded and returned to New York -- where, after making ends meet by driving a cab, he became "Coach Jake."

Bill Summers completed his two soccer fiction series, which each now comprise three editions. Targeted for readers 8-12 years old, the books relate the challenges of young soccer players on-field and off-field. In these stories, Max Miles and Shannon Swift experience the failures and triumphs of being part of a team and learn valuable life lessons.

I'd add Daniel Coyle's The Talent Code to the Coaching section.  An exploration of the neuromuscular component of the learning process. For those who coach at "advanced" levels of players 10-16, I consider it Part I of a trilogy (along with Peak and Practice Perfect) that informs all effective teaching and coaching.
