Thursday morning: What's in the news ...

1. Gio Reyna had two goals and two assists for Borussia Dortmund in its 5-1 win over Slavia Prague in the UEFA Youth League. Four days earlier, he dressed for the first time for Dortmund in a Bundesliga match. Reyna, 17, has four goals in the UEFA Youth League and three in the U19 Bundesliga despite lining up against older players. Dortmund finished tied for first in its group with Inter Milan. Taylor Booth had an assist in Bayern Munich's 3-0 win over Tottenham.

2. U.S. U-20 women's national team split squads dropped a pair of games at the Nike Friendlies in Florida. In the opener, the U-20 Red team fell to France, 2-0. In the nightcap, Brazil jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the half and beat the U.S. U-20 Blue team, 4-2. Jenna Nighswonger (USC) and Summer Yates (Washington) scored to cut the deficit to 3-2.

3. LSU has hired Sian Hudson as its new women's head coach after she spent the last three years at Division II Colorado-Colorado Springs, where she led the Mountain Lions to a 52-10-4 record. She was the director of the Pride Soccer Club for 12 years and an assistant at Colorado College for two.

    Splitting the US pool into 2 teams is a brilliant idea outside of the Olympics and World Cup competitions. I would like to more of it in the future. It is good for the US and good for other nations too. Win/Win.
