Quakes make Cristian Espinoza centerpiece of their attack

A day after Sporting KC acquired Mexican Alan Pulido for a club record transfer, the San Jose Earthquakes paid a club record fee to secure the permanent transfer of 24-year-old Argentine winger Cristian Espinoza from Spain's Villarreal.

Espinoza, who had two goals and 13 assists in 2019, was signed to a Designated Player contract. He was a big part of the Quakes' improved attack.

“Cristian was a very important player for us this year,” Earthquakes head coach Matias Almeyda said. “His qualities are not easily replicated and I’m happy he will continue with us.”

San Jose's pressing game that Almeyda instituted allowed his countryman to start many attacks down the right wing.

“We’re incredibly excited to make Cristian Espinoza a centerpiece of our team moving forward,” general manager Jesse Fioranelli said in a statement. “He embraces the spirit of serving his teammates like few do whether it be in front of goal or when in need of support. He had a tremendous impact on our club as well as our fans in 2019 and made it clear throughout our talks with Villarreal that he wanted to play for San Jose and San Jose only.”
