Sky Blue FC removes Freya Coombe's interim tag

Sky Blue FC named Freya Coombe as its head coach for the 2020 NWSL season.

The Englishwoman wore an interim tag for the last five games of the 2019 season. Sky Blue FC had been operating without a head coach after Denise Reddy left at the end of June. Goalkeeper coach Hugo Macedo had been running the team.

Coombe came to Sky Blue FC from New York Soccer Club, where she served as the director of scouting and as a Development Academy coach. Before that, Coombe coached at Reading for seven years, serving as the director of coaching for its Centre of Excellence and women’s development team manager.

“We are thrilled to continue the work we began with Freya this past season as this club continues to progress and push forward,” said Sky Blue general manager Alyse LaHue. “She is the embodiment of the culture we’re striving to develop, and I’m excited to have her back as we build a new future for Sky Blue.”

Seven of the eight head coaches in place for the 2020 NWSL season are English.
