U.S. women's national team head coach
Vlatko Andonovski has named a 28-player roster for a 10-day training camp that starts Jan. 5 in Tampa.
The squad includes 22 of 23 players on the 2019 U.S. Women's World Cup championship team -- all but Alex Morgan, who is pregnant -- and six other players.
Only Stanford sophomore Sophia Smith, who is uncapped, doesn't play in the NWSL. Midge Purce (Portland), Jane Campbell (Houston) and Smith -- were selected after they attended the USA's December ID camp in Florida.
Andonovski will name the 20-player roster for Olympic qualifying, which begins Jan. 28 against Haiti in Houston. At the Olympics, teams are only allowed to bring 18 players.
Andonovski: "The players are coming off their break, so I know everyone will be excited, rested, refreshed and ready to tackle our next goals, which are having a productive training camp and preparing for Olympic qualifying. A long-time strength of this team has been the internal competition on the training field and our coaching staff is looking forward to seeing that during camp as it will help us pick the best team to take to qualifying and try to earn our berth to Tokyo."
