College star Deyna Castellanos headed to Atletico Madrid

The NWSL has revamped its compensation policies, making it easier to pay and keep foreign stars, but they weren't enough to corral Deyna Castellanos.

The Florida State senior has signed with three-time defending Primera Iberdrola champion Atletico Madrid through the 2021-22 season. She will arrive before the UEFA Women's Champions League quarterfinal series against Barcelona in March.

Atletico, which trails Barcelona by five points in Spain's Primera Iberdrola, features such international players as Dutch keeper Sari van Veenendaal, England’s Toni Duggan and Mexico’s Charlyn Corral.

Castellanos led the Seminoles to the 2018 NCAA Division I title in her junior season. She was named to the All-ACC first team three times and selected as the conference's Offensive Player of the Year in 2019.

Castellanos starred for Venezuela at the Under-17 World Cup in 2014 and 2016, scoring an all-time high of 11 goals over the two competitions. She was named to the three-woman shortlist for the Best FIFA Women's Player in 2017, a selection that produced controversy because few had heard of her.

Without the carrot of a place on the USWNT, why would she stay? Compare UEFA champions league to CONCACAF champions lea...wait, they don't have that...CWC. Compare wages. It's a no-brainer for her, really.
