New U.S. under-20 women’s national team head coach Laura Harvey
called in 25 players to a training camp that opened Thursday in Lakewood Ranch, Florida.
After this camp,
Harvey will select the 20-player roster for the Concacaf Women's U-20 Championship to be held from Feb. 15-March 1 in the Dominican Republic. The 2020 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup will be held in
Panama and Costa Rica this August.
The camp squad includes North Carolina midfielder Brianna Pinto
and Virginia midfielder Alexa Spaanstra
, who were a part of the
USA’s 2018 U-20 Women’s World Cup team and are in their second U-20 cycle.
Missing is forward Sophia Smith
, who is currently training with the full U.S. national team
during its January camp. Several top players in the U-20 pool are out with injuries.
Besides Pinto and Smith, two other players born in 2000 were called into the senior national team for
an ID camp in December. Neither North Carolina's Maycee Bell
nor Stanford's Naomi Girma
(who withdrew from the ID camp after being injured in the College Cup) is with the U-20s.
