Friday morning: What's in the news ...

1. Ron Patel has left New Mexico United to become the president of USL Championship rival Rio Grande Valley FC, based in Edinburg, Texas. Patel was the first employee and chief revenue officer at New Mexico United, which led the USL Championship in attendance in its first season with an average of 12,693 fans a game in 2019. Previously, he had been the president of the Albuquerque Sol, which plays in the USL League Two.

2. Two more USL Championship teams, Louisville City and New Mexico United, will field under-23 teams in USL League Two for the 2020 season. Three MLS teams and six USL Championship teams will have U-23 teams in USL League Two in 2020. It was also announced that a team will begin play in Peoria, bringing to 14 the number of new USL League Two teams in 2020.

3. Bob Thompson has been confirmed as the men's head coach at Boston College, replacing Ed Kelly, who retired in November after 32 years in charge of the Eagles. Thompson led BC as interim coach the last two months of the 2019 season that ended with a loss to Washington in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Thompson, a BC alumnus, came from UMass Lowell in 2018 to work as associate coach.
