Olympic qualifying: Tuesday -- USA
vs. Haiti, 8:30 pm. ET.
1. Seven players started when Haiti took USA to penalties in the 2018 Concacaf U-20 semifinals. Haiti lost the shootout but turned around and beat Canada, 1-0, in the third-place game to qualify for a youth world championship on the women's side for the first time. Haiti dropped all three games at the 2018 Under-20 Women's World Cup, falling to China, Nigeria and Germany by one goal.
2. "Camp Nous" academies are turning out young stars. Both the men's and women's national team programs are benefiting from the "Camp Nous" academies that have taken in young players across Haiti. Of the 12 holdovers from 2018 U-20 World Cup, three are only 16 years old: Exafoot goalkeeper Madelina Fleuriot, and Dougenie Joseph and Melchie Dumornay, who both play for AS Tigresses.
3. Danielle Etienne follows in the footsteps of father and brother. The Fordham University freshman is part of one of New Jersey's most successful soccer-playing family. Father Derrick Etienne Sr. and older brother Derrick Etienne Jr. (currently on trial at the Columbus Crew after being released by the New York Red Bulls) both played for Haiti's men's national team. Danielle played at the 2018 U-20 World Cup in France and debuted for Haiti at the senior level last October.
