Roster: New U.S. boys U-17 cycle starts under Coach Larry Sunderland

Twenty 2004-born players will take part in the first U.S. U-17 boys national team camp of 2020-21 cycle, and play against Spain (Feb. 19), host England (Feb. 21) and Denmark (Feb. 24) at a UEFA Development Tournament at England's St. George’s Park in Burton upon Trent.

Larry Sunderland, Director of Player Development at FC Cincinnati, who coached the U.S. U-16s in 2019 on a per-diem basis, will lead the camp. U.S. Soccer has yet to hire a full-time coach for the U-17s, which are aiming the 2021 U-17 World Cup, for players born in 2004 or later.

Since the 2017 U-17 World Cup, when John Hackworth guided the USA to the quarterfinals, the U-17s have been coached by Hackworth (through July 2018), Shaun Tsakiris, Dave van den Bergh, and Raphael Wicky (March-December, 2019), under whom the USA exited in the first round of the 2019 U-17 World Cup. In November, Junior Gonzalez, coach of LA Galaxy II of the USL Championship, coached the U-17s, filling in for Wicky, at the Nike International Friendlies in Lakewood, Florida. The U.S. U-16s, coached by Sunderland, finished first in the competition that included Turkey and the Netherlands.
